My aim was to craft a space where myth, ritual, and the contemporary moment merge within a multi-layered sonic landscape—a world of sound that is not only heard but physically felt.
The immersive quality of the work emerges from a distinct spatial setup: while the audience hears the narrative through headphones, the music and sound textures flow into the space from four external speakers. This dual-layered perception—sound from within and sound from without—creates a heightened state of awareness. The body becomes a resonant field; vibrations move through the space and the listener, blurring the line between internal and external perception.

The piece was developed through a site-specific compositional process. I brought my sound material into the hall of the premiere, where I adjusted and reshaped it in di- rect dialogue with the acoustic properties of the space. In this interplay between resonance, movement, and architecture, the composition evolved into a living organism that responded to the environment and to human presence.

One example within the composition is Swathes of Fog, an auditory entry point into the immersive world of Die Bakchen. Emerging from a deep, mist-filled silence, distant animal calls and layered natural am- biences slowly unfold, recorded in the Portuguese forests where I first captured the sonic atmosphere of isolation and breath. Gradually, subt- le distortions and resonant low frequencies build tension until a pul- sating 4/4 rhythm begins to rise—fragile at first, then growing into an entrancing, physical vibration that fills the space. Heard simultaneously through headphones and from four surrounding speakers, this piece blurs perception: the sound seems to come from within and without, evoking a sense of being enveloped by a living, breathing landsca- pe. Swathes of Fog is one of six original compositions and numerous soundscapes I created for the production, each exploring a different emotional and spatial facet of the myth through immersive sound de- sign.

Massenhysterie?

TEXT, REGIE: Philipp Scholtysik
SOUNDSCAPE, MUSIK: Abelha Supersónica
STIMME: Ruth Schmidt, Philipp Scholtysik
RAUM: Nils Wildegans
DRAMATURGIE: Jacob Bussmann
KONZEPTIONELLER INPUT: Frédéric De Carlo
PRODUKTION: Laura-Marie Preßmar

TEASER: Sophia Igel

Bild: Philipp Scholtysik

Premiere 25.10. – 27.10.2024 Naxos Hallen/ Frankfurt am Main, DE#composition #sound design #music For Die Bakchen, I created an immersive sound composition that transforms the ancient myth into a deeply embodied listening experience.
